Love, what is it?

Writer: DeAudra ReedDeAudra Reed

First, let's just talk about 2025.

It's a new year with new opportunities, new chances, and new possibilities. Just like with any new year, love is what you make it. We can get hooked on all of what should be because it has been forecasted and predetermined by whomever we allow to make the rules in our lives but if that person isn't ourselves, we will only fail. Fail to see their dreams, desires, and wishes through. Fail to live up to their standards. Fail to fashion a life, or a love, after their beliefs and designs. Fail to succeed at doing, choosing, and being anything other than ourselves.

When we fail at love, we fail at us. We fail to choose partners who honor who we are. We fail to choose ourselves when the decision to walk away for our own good feels hard. We fail to prioritize, admit, and acknowledge our true desires and needs, avoiding necessary conversations and moments of vulnerability. We fail.

Love doesn't.

Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:8 tells us that. Many will speak about love as if it cannot speak for itself. They will define it through the lenses of their own experiences, views, and beliefs. They will claim to know it better than it knows itself. And still, at the end of the day, the week, the month, the year, when time stands still and all the voices cease, when the explanations and understandings are no more, love will remain.

Love is what you make it. Love is what you allow it to be. Love is what it is without the added ingredients. It is pure. It is organic. It is real and it is raw. It is not to be caged or saged. It is not to be filtered or sifted for its grains. It is no good once manipulated, altered, or duplicated.

Love is life. Love is light. Love is fresh air on a brisk Winter's night. Love is the first warmth of Spring. It is the echo that resounds when freedom bells ring. It is the pillar of hope, truth, and all that is sacred. Love is what you make it.
